0071 What is the
difference between rabbits vs. hares?
Answer 1:
I have never heard it explained that way, but
it is partially true. I never hear of a domesticated rabbit being called a hare.
However, I hear of wild rabbits all the time. 090507
Answer 2:
No, I haven’t, and I don’t know the difference, if any. I rarely hear people
say the word ‘hare’. I usually only see that in books or on TV. If it is not a
difference in domestication or species, then maybe it is due to regional
language differences, like soda vs. pop? Or maybe no hares live in the
Midwest!* That is interesting. I hadn’t heard anything like that before.

* Both hares and rabbits live in the Midwest, according
to Nara Bowers, Rick Bowers, & Kenn Kaufman: Kaufman Focus Guides Mammals of
North America (New York: Houghton Mifflin, 2004), p. 22
