May beetles/June bugs/June
beetles
Believe it or not, a young boy
(10 years old?), Josiah found this bug during Kris' Birding Walk. He's so observant
that he found last year's red-eyed vireo nest as well. Naturalist Matt of
Arboretum identified this bug as a "June bug."
I (a Japanese) have heard of June bugs, but never seen this bug before. "Josiah
and Matt, thanks for showing this June bug." This pic was taken on Kris'
Birding Walk at the
Roberts Bird Sanctuary, Minneapolis,
MN on April 17, 2012.

What does the Average Joe think of when “June” is mentioned?
June
6月と聞けば、アメリカ人は、何を思うのでしょうか?
May beetles/June
bugs - these are the large (3-4cm?), slow-flying brown beetles that most often
show up in May, but I am pretty sure they can appear in June as well. Sometimes
they emerge in large numbers. I remember one warm, still summer night they
swarmed over a neighbor's tree. He had an outdoor light on his house, and we
were swatting them out of the air with tennis and badminton rackets. It was
cruel, but we were kids. We didn't like it when they would fly into our faces
while riding a bike or running around. <
