Carolina Grasshopper Photo 3 Two Carolina Grasshoppers* get together. Body colors vary from yellowish gray (left) to reddish brown (right). We've seen many yellowish gray ones, but this is the first time for us to see a reddish brown one. Females are larger than males. When Carolina grasshoppers fly, they look like Mourning Cloak butterflies. The Carolina grasshoppers are commonly found here in Minnesota (in southern Canada and throughout most of the United Sates). This pic was taken at Maplewood Nature Center, Minneapolis, MN, on August 11, 2012.
